When I started my journey as an Ironman, the goal of getting an Uncut Onyx felt like a massive hurdle. I remember wasting hours spam-selling runes to the wrong shops and losing millions in potential value because I didn’t understand how the TzHaar economy actually worked. After a lot of trial and error—and way too much time spent in Mor Ul Rek—I’ve refined the process.
This guide is designed to help you bypass the mistakes I made and get your gear upgrades as efficiently as possible.
Contents
1. The “Chaos Rune” Method (The Gold Standard)
For almost every Ironman, selling Chaos Runes to the TzHaar-Mej-Roh’s Rune Store is the fastest way to stack Tokkul.
- The Strategy: You sell your Chaos Runes to the shop in exchange for Tokkul.
- Essential Prep: Always wear your Karamja Gloves (any tier from the Easy Diary up to Elite) before trading. These gloves provide a crucial discount when buying items and help you get the best value when selling.
- Source Your Runes: The most reliable way to build a massive stack of Chaos Runes is by completing Barrows chests. It is a stable, consistent grind that provides you with both runes and powerful Barrows equipment.
2. Fight Cave Completion & Cape Recycling
If you are confident in your combat abilities, the Fight Cave is a great way to earn a lump sum of Tokkul while training.
- Completion Reward: Every successful completion of the Fight Cave grants you 16,064 Tokkul in addition to your Fire Cape.
- Cape Sacrifice: If you have extra Fire Capes from pet hunting or Slayer tasks, you can sacrifice them to TzHaar-Mej-Jal for an additional 8,000 Tokkul each.
3. AFK Method: Infernal Eels
For players who prefer a low-intensity, “set it and forget it” activity, fishing Infernal Eels is a viable path.
- Requirement: You need 80 Fishing to start.
- The Process: You fish for them in the Mor Ul Rek city and crush them with a hammer and chisel.
- Side Benefits: Besides Tokkul, you gain Onyx bolt tips and Lava scale shards, which are incredibly useful for Herblore training and crafting high-damage ammunition.
4. Killing TzHaar Monsters
You can also fight the citizens of Mor Ul Rek, like the TzHaar-Ket, for direct Tokkul drops.
- Is it efficient? Generally, no. While it is a decent way to train combat for mid-level accounts, it is significantly slower than selling runes. Use this only if you need raw Slayer experience or combat training while working on other goals.
5. Strategic “World-Hopping” and Shop Management
This is the “secret sauce” that many new players miss, and it is where I personally saved the most time.
- Avoid the “Bulk Dump”: Never sell all your runes to a single shop world in one transaction.
- How it works: As the shop’s stock of a specific item increases, the amount of Tokkul it pays you drops drastically.
- The Pro-Strategy: Sell your runes in small batches—I personally stick to 10 or 50 at a time—and hop worlds to keep the buy-back price at its peak.
Final Quick-Start Checklist
- Complete the Easy Diary: Get your Karamja Gloves immediately—they are non-negotiable for efficiency.
- Know Your Goal: An Uncut Onyx costs 260,000 Tokkul when using your gloves.
- Use the Right Tools: Don’t guess the math. If you want to know exactly how many runs or rune-batches you need, use our [OSRS Tokkul Calculator] to map out your progress.
By combining Barrows runs with smart shop management, you will find that the “Onyx grind” is actually quite manageable. Good luck, and may your RNG be on your side!
